Ode to Love & Its Messenger, Music (post 1)

There is nothing like hearing your significant other say all the right things…sigh

Love is something special people, and I’m not just saying that because I’m in love, I’m saying it because it has forever and always will be true. And to think about it music has always played a major part in passing on the message of love. Music spreads the message of love in such a unique and wonderful way…I ♥ MUSIC

With that being said, this blog post is an ode to love and to music spreading the beautiful message of love. The songs posted will be random (because yall know I am very random at times) and this blog entry will not and definitely could not possibly encompass all of the wonderful love songs that have been written.

This first song is one that I hadn’t heard for a while but tonight as I tuned in to VH1 Soul Player (love me some VH1 Soul Player) this song was coming on and immediately I remembered how awesome it was. PLUS I have always been a huge Ladies Love Cool James fan so anything he says I’m ready and willing to hear. LL said something with this song. Check out the lyrics

(and we won’t even discuss LL eating with those chopsticks…woah now lol)

Baby smile today
Cause I’ve been imagining more ways
I’m gon’ love you better
When your friends’ll see you too
Just when you think there’s nothin’ else I can do
I’m gon’ love you better
-LL Cool J

This song is one that I feel was slept on and did not get the notoriety that it deserved. It is such a sweet song and it remains one of my favorite songs. It is Wherever You Are by Terry Ellis (EnVogue member) The lyrics to this song speak of a love so powerful that distance means nothing…not a thang.

My love it’s been such a long long time
One day I always knew I’d hear from
you again
But I’m sorry to find you’re having such hard times
But you
thought of me in your time of need
So I say,
Build me a road dear,
and I will come running
No matter how long or how hard it may be

-Terry Ellis

Jill Scott & Anthony Hamilton, what a magnificent combination. #winning Their voices and soul intertwined together on the song So In Love is lovely. The song is upbeat and fun but the message of love is ever so clear. This song describes a love that isn’t plain or vague, not just in love but SO in love. I love it!

(and the video is also great! It’s been a while since I’ve seen a video that made me want to get up and do a little step, but this one did it oh and the video actually relates to the song, how often does that happen these days???)

I’m so in love with you that I can’t help myself
Can’t help it!
As long as it’s me and you we don’t need nothing else
I’ve got you
Got you
Oh Let’s make it last forever
-Jill Scott & Anthony Hamilton

Now it is fine and dandy to love someone, BUT when that somebody loves you back you really got it going on! Teddy  Pendergrass was known as a lover and the lyrics to his 1970’s hit When Somebody Loves You Back is right on point. Teddy said it best…

We can build a world of love, a life of joy
Make our goal each other’s happiness
I will do for you anything that I can
Oh, everyday I wanna do a little more
Do a little more, just a little bit more
It’s so good, good lovin’ somebody
And that somebody loves you back and that’s a fact
-Teddy Pendergrass

If I have never said it before, I will say it now “I am a huge Kindred the Family Soul fan!” Their music is so special. I can feel their love, they pour it out in their song lyrics and they exemplify Black Love. Their song Stars is one of my favorite Kindred the Family Soul songs. The lyrics are so rich. If you don’t know what real, unconditional love is about you could definitely learn something from this song.

We’ve come so far

Stars look up at you baby

My  heart belongs right here next to  you, baby
If I had just one  wish it would be to stay together

Stay together, let’s grow together

It’s not much to ask of us, I know we can do it

I always knew it

-Kindred the Family Soul

I will wrap up this post with a song by my girl Gladys and the Pips. Gladys Knight has a powerful voice and this song is one of those songs that when you actually sit down and listen to the words from beginning to end you can’t help but be impressed. The words of this song tell a story of a real love, a strong love, a love that is appreciated. Umph now that’s something special!

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Ooo, you’ll be there between each line of pain and glory
‘Cause you’re the best thing that ever happened to me
Ah, you’re the best thing that ever happened to me

-Gladys Knight & The Pips

  1. Black Girl:

Great post! I’ve always been a big fan of Teddy P, Barry White, Donny Hathaway, Layla Hathaway, Regina Belle, Phyllis Hyman, and many more. Soul music at it’s best…Indeed!
